Whether it’s a present for your mum, dad, friend or partner, you can take pride in making your gift look beautiful and thoughtfully wrapped. However, some items can be tricky to wrap nicely, such as a dressing gown due to its bulky and undefined shape. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fold your dressing gown neatly, so it looks incredible under the Christmas tree, among their birthday gifts or for any special occasion.

How to fold a dressing gown

Before wrapping a dressing gown, robe or housecoat, it’s essential to fold it properly. Folding makes it easier to handle and gives the gift a tidier look when wrapped. Even if your dressing gown was neatly folded upon purchase, it’s common for it to loosen up during transit or after inspection. Follow these quick and easy steps to fold your dressing gown.

  1. Lay the dressing gown flat
  2. Find a flat surface, like a table or bed, where you can spread out the dressing gown. Put the belt to one side and lay the gown with the back facing downward. Make sure the front flaps are overlapping and smooth out any wrinkles.

  3. Turn the dressing gown over
  4. This can be a little bit tricky but try to carefully turn the dressing gown over, keeping it in shape. Next, take your belt and put it through the loops at the side of the gown. Leave the ends of the belt sticking out and make sure they don’t get tangled up as you continue to fold.

  5. Align the sleeves
  6. Take each sleeve and fold it back towards the centre of the dressing gown. The sleeves should be laid flat across the back of the gown to minimise extra bulk.

  7. Fold the gown in half
  8. With the sleeves folded, fold one side of the gown over to the other side. Depending on the gown’s size, you may need to fold it twice to get it to a manageable width. The aim is to end up with a compact, rectangular shape that is easier to wrap.

  9. Roll or fold down the middle
  10. With the sleeves folded, fold one side of the gown over to the other side. Depending on the gown’s size, you may need to fold it twice to get it to a manageable width. The aim is to end up with a compact, rectangular shape that is easier to wrap.

  11. Secure with the belt

The dressing gown should now be in a neat square shape with the two ends of the belt sticking out on either side. Tie those ends together for a tidy finish and to keep the gown in shape.

How to wrap a dressing gown

With your dressing gown folded neatly, you’re ready to start wrapping. Dressing gowns tend to be large and fluffy, meaning they can be difficult to wrap. You can use our step-by-step guide to make the process as simple and frustration-free as possible.

  1. Choose the wrapping paper
  2. As dressing gowns can be heavy and easily manipulated, thinner paper may tear during wrapping. It’s therefore a good idea to opt for paper that’s durable and large enough to cover the entire gown.

  3. Measure and cut
  4. Place the folded gown on the wrapping paper and pull the paper over it to gauge how much you need. You’ll want to ensure that both the top and bottom edges can meet in the centre of the gown. Once you’ve measured the paper, cut it to size, leaving a few extra inches on each side for a cleaner fold.

  5. Wrap the gown
  6. Place the dressing gown in the centre of the wrapping paper. Bring one side of the paper to the centre and hold it down. Then bring the other side across and tape the paper together as tightly as you can. This technique will create a snug fit around the gown, making it easier to finish the wrap neatly.

  7. Tuck in the ends
  8. To secure the ends, fold them in a triangular shape. Take one end of the wrapping paper and fold the left and right corners inward so that the edge forms a point. Then, fold this point up toward the middle and secure it with tape. Repeat on the other side. This step gives the ends a polished look and ensures the paper stays in place.

  9. Add extra touches
  10. Once the gown is wrapped, it’s time to add some decorative touches. For the perfect finish, wrap a ribbon around the gift, securing it with a bow or knot on top. You could also add a gift tag with a message or the recipient’s name, attaching it to the ribbon or taping it onto the wrapping paper.

In colder weather, dressing gowns are the perfect cosy gift for your dad, partner or any of your friends and family. Although wrapping them may require a little extra precision and a few more steps, the result is worth it.
